This isn't a equipment failure—it's a brightness mismatch. Outdoor LED screen brightness is one of the most misunderstood specifications in the industry, and getting it wrong undermines everything else you've planned. The right brightness keeps content readable in daylight, maintains colour integrity and ensures your message lands regardless of weather or time of day.

What Brightness Actually Means: Nits, Lumens and Sunlight

LED screen brightness is measured in nits (also called candelas per square metre, or cd/m²). One nit is one unit of light intensity. The higher the nit rating, the brighter the screen.

This matters because sunlight is very bright. On a clear day, direct sunlight measures roughly 100,000 nits. Your screen needs enough brightness to compete with that ambient light, not try to outshine it, but to rise above the background glare enough that text and images remain legible.

Rule of thumb: Outdoor screens typically need between 5,000 and 10,000 nits to remain visible in daylight. Indoor or shaded outdoor setups might work at 2,000–3,000 nits. Direct sunlight demands the higher end.

Choosing brightness is not about making a screen as bright as possible. It's about matching brightness to the ambient light where your screen will be installed and the viewing distance of your audience. A screen that's too bright wastes power, generates unnecessary heat and can cause eye strain. A screen that's too dim becomes invisible the moment the sun angles toward it.

  • Morning and afternoon angles: If your event is in early summer or at a time when the sun is low, direct glare on the screen becomes a major factor. A screen rated at 5,000 nits might struggle against mid-morning sunlight at 45 degrees.

  • Cloud cover: Overcast days reduce ambient light to roughly 5,000–10,000 nits. A 3,000-nit screen can work here. But if clouds break, you're suddenly underpowered.

  • Reflection and surroundings: Light-coloured buildings, water, and white marquee fabric bounce sunlight onto the screen, increasing effective glare. Dark sites (open fields, tree-lined venues) are kinder to lower-brightness screens.

  • Viewing distance: The further your audience is from the screen, the dimmer it appears. A 3,000-nit screen readable from 10 metres may look faint at 30 metres.

Professional event organisers factor all of this into the brief. Underestimating brightness is one of the quickest ways to disappoint stakeholders on the day.

Brightness vs. Pixel Pitch: A Related But Different Choice

Brightness and pixel pitch (the spacing between LEDs) are often confused. Pixel pitch controls image clarity and sharpness at different distances. Brightness controls visibility in sunlight. You need both to be right.

A fine pixel pitch (2.6mm or smaller) gives sharp, detailed images, but smaller pixels pack fewer LEDs, which can reduce peak brightness. Larger pixel pitches (6mm or more) allow more LEDs per unit area, boosting brightness, but the image looks coarser up close. For outdoor events, the balance depends on whether audience members will be close to the screen or distant. A sports fan zone 50 metres from a screen can tolerate larger pitch and benefits from higher brightness. A product display where visitors approach within 5 metres demands finer pitch, and brightness becomes secondary to clarity.

How to Specify Brightness for Your Event

When planning an outdoor LED screen, ask your supplier these questions:

  • What's the expected ambient light at your event time and season? A winter event at 3pm needs different brightness than a summer evening gig.

  • Where will viewers be standing? Specify minimum and maximum viewing distance. Crew closer to the screen, attendees further back.

  • Is the site sheltered or open? Covered venues or tree-lined spaces can use lower brightness. Exposed fields need more.

  • What's being displayed? Bright text and logos on dark backgrounds are harder to read in sunlight than detailed photographs. Specify content type.

  • What brightness rating does the screen supplier recommend? Experienced providers account for these factors; vague answers (e.g., "5,000 nits will be fine") suggest they haven't thought it through.

A professional supplier will ask you these questions before recommending equipment. If they just offer a single brightness option for all outdoor events, they're cutting corners.

The Hidden Costs of Getting It Wrong

Insufficient brightness causes visible problems during the event: washed-out visuals, poor colour reproduction, and audience frustration. But there are also operational costs.

  • Content redesign: If brightness falls short, your creative team scrambles to increase contrast, enlarge text and strip detail—all mid-event fixes that look rushed.

  • Power and cooling: Screens running at maximum brightness in hot weather consume more power and generate heat. You'll need bigger generators and more cooling. Undersized power specs cause equipment to throttle brightness automatically, compounding the problem.

  • Crew time: Troubleshooting visibility issues steals technical crew from other tasks. On a tight event day, that's expensive delay.

  • Brand perception: A dim or unclear screen undermines sponsors and product launches. It signals poor planning to stakeholders.

The cost of specifying brightness correctly upfront is negligible. The cost of correcting it on the day is real.

Indoor Screens: Why Brightness Still Matters (But Differently)

Indoor events don't face direct sunlight, but brightness still affects image quality. Ambient light from windows, venue lighting and reflective ceilings all reduce perceived contrast. A 2,000-nit screen in a bright conference hall will look dim next to a 4,000-nit screen in the same room.

For indoor corporate events, exhibitions and presentations, higher brightness isn't necessary for visibility—but it does improve colour vibrancy and make the screen visually dominant in the room. Your content pops, commands attention, and feels intentional rather than just projected onto a wall.

Indoor brightness choices are more about aesthetic impact than survival. Outdoor brightness choices are non-negotiable.
