That's where brightness becomes non-negotiable. An LED screen with poor outdoor brightness doesn't fail catastrophically—it just fades. Content becomes washed out, text is hard to read, and people stop looking. You've paid for the screen, but the audience can't actually see what's on it.
LED screen brightness is measured in nits—a unit of light intensity. For outdoor use, nits matter more than resolution, more than size, and sometimes more than cost. This guide explains why brightness is critical for outdoor LED screens and how to choose the right level for your event.
What Are Nits and Why Do They Matter Outdoors?
A nit is a unit of brightness (candela per square metre). It's a measurable property of how much light an LED screen produces.
Typical brightness levels:
Indoor screens: 500–1,500 nits. Enough for controlled environments where light is limited.
Outdoor screens in shade: 2,000–4,000 nits. Handles overcast conditions and venues with natural shade.
Outdoor screens in direct sunlight: 5,000–10,000 nits. Essential for sports screenings, fan zones, and open-air events.
Why the jump? In daylight, ambient light is overwhelming. A 1,500-nit screen in bright sun looks dim because the sun itself is throwing enormous amounts of light at the screen and the ground around it. The human eye automatically adjusts, and your screen content becomes hard to distinguish from the background brightness.

Evening events: Outdoor screens running at dusk or after dark need far less brightness. A 2,000-nit screen looks stunning once the sun sets. Many outdoor events shift from high brightness during the day to lower brightness at night—but the screen must handle the day if it's going live in daylight.

High-brightness LED screens cost more than low-brightness screens. There's no way around it. Producing 8,000 nits requires more power, better thermal management, and higher-quality components than producing 2,000 nits.
But it's not just a linear cost increase. You'll also notice differences in:
Power consumption: Brighter screens draw more energy. If you're running on event power or a generator, that matters for your logistics and operating costs.
Thermal load: High-brightness screens generate more heat. They need better cooling, which affects setup, structure, and sometimes noise (fans can be audible).
Lifespan and maintenance: Running at maximum brightness constantly reduces component life. Professional outdoor screens are built for it, but you should know it's a consideration.
That said, buying too little brightness is the more expensive mistake. A screen people can't see is a waste of hire cost, event budget, and audience attention. It's worth investing in the right brightness level from the start.
Choosing the Right Brightness for Your Event Type
Sports screenings and fan zones: Go high—6,000–10,000 nits minimum. People are watching replays and match content in daylight. They need to see every detail. A bright, crisp image keeps the crowd engaged.
Brand activations in busy locations: 5,000–8,000 nits. You're competing for attention in crowded spaces (high streets, festivals, car parks). A bright, eye-catching screen stops people in their tracks. A dim one blends into the background.
Outdoor corporate events or exhibitions: 4,000–6,000 nits. You need clarity for presentations and product displays, but you're not in an ultra-competitive environment. Enough brightness to be readable and professional-looking.
Retail or permanent installations: 3,000–5,000 nits for storefront or showroom installations. Consider the time of day when customers arrive and the direction of natural light.
Evening or night-time events: 2,000–3,000 nits. This is where you can save on brightness (and cost) if your event runs after dark.
Brightness Isn't Everything—But It Matters Most

Contrast ratio: A bright screen that can't produce true blacks looks washed out. Good brightness paired with strong contrast is what makes a screen pop in daylight.

Refresh rate: Outdoor screens need fast refresh rates (1,920 Hz or higher) to avoid flicker and ensure smooth video. Brightness without smooth refresh looks cheap.
Weather protection: Your screen must be built for rain, wind, and dust. A bright screen that fails in light drizzle isn't reliable.
