The Problem with Underestimating Brightness
You've hired a decent LED screen, the content looks sharp indoors, and you're confident about the event. Then the sun comes out. Your screen washes out. People squint, move, or simply stop looking. No matter how expensive the screen is, a brightness problem will undermine your whole setup.
This is one of the most common oversights when planning outdoor events, exhibitions or installations. Brightness — measured in nits — is not a luxury feature. It's the difference between a screen people can see and one they can't.
What Are Nits and Why They Matter
A nit is a unit of brightness (technically luminous intensity per unit area). When you see an LED screen spec listing "3,000 nits" or "5,000 nits", that number tells you how bright the screen can output under full brightness.
Indoors, a typical office or venue screen runs 500–1,000 nits. That's fine because you're shielded from sunlight. Outdoors, you're competing with direct daylight, which can easily exceed 10,000 nits on a clear day.
Rule of thumb: Your outdoor LED screen brightness should be at least 2–3 times brighter than the ambient light it needs to overcome.
That means a screen in partial shade might get away with 2,500–3,500 nits. A screen in full sun, at a fan zone or sports event, typically needs 5,000 nits or higher to remain visible and punchy.
Daylight Conditions Shape Your Brightness Requirement
Not all outdoor events face the same light challenge. The context matters.
Morning or late afternoon events: Lower sun angle means softer light and less glare. A moderately bright screen (3,000–4,000 nits) often suffices.
Midday events (10am–3pm): Direct overhead sun is intense. You'll need 5,000+ nits to cut through it reliably.
Cloudy or overcast days: Ambient light is gentler. 2,500–3,500 nits may be adequate, but relying solely on weather is risky for large events.

The safest approach for high-profile events is to spec for bright-daylight conditions, even if your event might be partly cloudy. You avoid scrambling on the day.
Viewing Distance and Screen Size Affect Perceived Brightness
A 10-metre-high screen at a festival needs different brightness thinking than a 2-metre retail display. The maths is practical:
The further people stand from a screen, the more brightness they need to see detail and colour. A screen that looks dim from 50 metres away might feel too bright at 5 metres. This is partly because of how the human eye perceives brightness over distance, and partly because a larger screen's light spread means less intensity per person.
When planning an outdoor LED screen, consider both the brightness spec and the typical viewing distance. A sports fan zone screen needs high nits because crowds stand back and daylight is direct. A retail entrance screen, viewed up close, can work with lower nits if it's positioned correctly and the content is bold.
The Real-World Impact of Screen Brightness Mismatches
Too dim a screen causes problems beyond poor visibility:
Low engagement: People won't stop and look if they can't see clearly. Your content, brand message or match footage gets ignored.
Colour wash-out: A screen struggling against daylight loses colour depth. Reds flatten, blues disappear. Logos and branding don't punch.
Video quality illusion: Even high-resolution, premium content looks cheap if the screen is too dim to show it properly.
Accessibility issues: Attendees with visual impairments or older eyes will struggle even more with a dim screen in bright conditions.
Conversely, a screen that's too bright can cause glare and eye strain, particularly at night or for people sitting directly in front of it. The goal is right brightness for the conditions, not maximum brightness at all times.
How to Spec Brightness for Your Event

What time of day will the screen be in use?
Will it be in direct sun, shade, or variable light?
How far away will the primary audience be?
What's the screen size and pixel pitch?
Is weather protection needed (cover, weatherproofing)?

A permanent install typically needs a minimum of 4,000–5,000 nits to handle peak summer daylight without dimming or losing impact. Many suppliers also build in adaptive brightness control, which adjusts the screen's output based on ambient light sensors. This keeps content visible and colour-accurate throughout the day, whilst reducing power consumption and heat during lower-light periods.
For long-term installations, the slightly higher upfront cost of a brighter screen and smart controls is an investment in consistent performance and lower operational costs.
Brightness, Cost and Budget Reality
Brighter screens cost more. A 5,000-nit outdoor screen is more expensive than a 2,500-nit indoor screen, and a 10,000-nit ultra-bright display is pricier still.
However, the cost of getting brightness wrong — content that no one can see, a poor event experience, or needing to upgrade mid-project — often exceeds the upfront savings of choosing a dim screen. Budget for the right brightness from the start. It's worth it.
