An LED screen that works brilliantly indoors can fail outdoors. An outdoor screen installed in a heated, controlled room wastes money and creates unnecessary heat and power draw. The difference isn't just about putting a screen "outside" or keeping it "inside"—it's about how light, weather, power and cooling work in real conditions.

When you're choosing between indoor and outdoor LED screens for an event, exhibition, or permanent installation, the environment you're putting it in should drive the decision. This guide covers the practical differences so you can make the right call.

Brightness: why outdoor screens need to work harder

The biggest difference between indoor and outdoor LED screens is brightness. Indoor screens typically run at 500–1500 nits (a measure of brightness). Outdoor screens need 3000–10,000 nits or more, depending on sunlight and the time of day.

Why? Sunlight is powerful. An outdoor screen in daylight competes with direct sun hitting it. If your screen isn't bright enough, the image washes out, text becomes unreadable, and colours flatten. This is especially critical for sports screenings, fan zones, and daytime outdoor events.

Indoor screens operate in controlled light. You're managing reflections from ceiling fixtures and windows, not competing with midday sun. This is why an indoor screen's lower brightness is perfectly adequate—and why running an expensive, high-brightness outdoor screen indoors is pointless.

Brightness matters most in daylight. Indoor screens work in shadows; outdoor screens work in sun.

Weather resistance: materials, seals and durability

Outdoor LED screens face water, wind, dust, temperature swings and UV exposure. They're built differently.

  • Sealing and waterproofing: Outdoor screens have sealed enclosures, gaskets and drainage. Water ingress damages components fast. Indoor screens aren't sealed the same way because they don't need to be.

  • Materials: Outdoor screens use corrosion-resistant coatings and reinforced frames. They're heavier and more robust.

  • Thermal management: Outdoor screens deal with temperature extremes—frost to 40°C+ heat. They need thermal buffers and ventilation. Indoor screens, in climate-controlled venues, avoid this stress.

  • UV protection: Outdoor enclosures protect components from direct sun damage. Indoor screens don't need this.

If you install an outdoor screen indoors, you're paying for features you don't use. If you put an indoor screen outside for even a weekend event, moisture and cold will degrade components quickly.

Power consumption and cooling

High-brightness outdoor screens draw more power than indoor screens. A large outdoor LED screen can draw 20–50 kW or more under full brightness. This affects your power budget, cable runs and what infrastructure you need on site.

Brightness also generates heat. Outdoor screens cool naturally through their enclosure design and airflow. Indoor screens in fully sealed rooms can overheat if you're running them at outdoor brightness levels—you'd need active cooling, which adds cost and noise.

For a temporary event, this might mean power generators, distribution boards and heavier-gauge cabling. For a permanent indoor installation, you want a screen designed for the thermal profile of that room.

Image quality and colour accuracy

Indoor venues favour excellent colour accuracy and smooth gradation—important for corporate presentations, fashion shows and exhibitions. Indoor LED screens are typically colour-calibrated and optimised for viewing in controlled light, often with lower pixel pitches (smaller pixels, sharper detail).

Outdoor screens prioritise visibility and impact over fine detail. They're built tough and bright, not necessarily colour-perfect. This is fine for sports screenings and fan zones, where motion and scale matter more than graduation nuance.

Installation and structural demands

Outdoor screens are heavier because of structural reinforcement and weather sealing. They need solid mounting: steel frameworks, ground supports or building fixings capable of handling wind load. This affects setup time and labour.

Indoor screens can often be lighter and mounted on simpler structures—rigging points, truss systems or ground frames in protected spaces. Installation is faster and less complex.

Temporary outdoor events (festivals, fan zones) may use mobile trailer screens, which package brightness, weather protection and power into a self-contained unit. Permanent outdoor installations need permanent structure and power.

Cost considerations

Outdoor screens cost more because of durability, brightness, weatherproofing and structural engineering. Indoor screens are typically cheaper to purchase and cheaper to run (lower power, no active cooling, simpler setup).

For hire, indoor screen rental is often better value for indoor events. Outdoor hire includes heavier transport, more crew for safe setup, structural assessment and power provisioning. Factor this in when you're budgeting.

Choose indoor screens for:

Mixed environments: Some venues have both—a protected outdoor area under cover (like a terrace or marquee) might use either, depending on ambient light, weather exposure and power availability. Assess the specific conditions.
