Why Brightness Matters for Outdoor LED Screens
Outdoor LED screen brightness determines whether your content is visible in sunlight or washed out. We explain why nits, ambient light and screen placement directly affect your event's success.

The Problem: Bright Sun vs Bright Screens
A 5,000-nit LED screen looks impressive indoors. Put it outdoors in direct sunlight, and it disappears. This is the first thing event organisers and venue managers learn the hard way.
The issue is simple physics: ambient light. On a sunny day, natural light bounces around your outdoor space at enormous intensity. An LED screen that isn't bright enough will be overpowered by that ambient light. Your content becomes invisible, even if the screen hardware is expensive and well-specced. On event day, when your crowd is standing in front of a blank-looking display, brightness matters very much indeed.
Choosing the right outdoor LED screen brightness is not about showing off. It's about making sure your investment is actually seen.
Understanding Nits and Light Output
LED screen brightness is measured in nits (or candelas per square metre). A nit is the amount of light emitted from one square metre of screen surface.
Here's why that matters:
Indoor screens (conference rooms, retail displays): typically 3,000–5,000 nits. They're designed for controlled light environments.
Outdoor screens in partial shade (covered pavilions, evening events): 5,000–8,000 nits. Enough to compete with reflected light, not direct sun.
Outdoor screens in full sunlight (sports events, fan zones, brand activations in open spaces): 10,000+ nits. Built to cut through daylight.
The relationship is linear: the brighter your ambient conditions, the brighter your screen needs to be. There's no substitute for raw light output when the sun is high.
How Ambient Light Affects What People See
Ambient light is the light already in your environment—from the sun, sky, reflected surfaces, and surrounding structures. It's what makes it possible to see anything outdoors in the first place.
But it also competes with your LED screen. If ambient light is very bright, your screen's image appears faded or washed out, even if the screen is working at full power. The human eye struggles to distinguish the screen's colours and contrast because the light reflecting off its surface is being overwhelmed by ambient brightness.
This is especially noticeable with:
White backgrounds or light-coloured graphics (they blend into the bright sky)
Screens at ground level where sunlight reflects directly off the display surface
Midday events in summer, when the sun is highest and brightest
Reflective ground surfaces (concrete, light-coloured tarmac) that bounce light back at the screen
The fix isn't usually to increase brightness infinitely—it's to plan your screen placement, content design and event timing to work with the light conditions you actually have.
Brightness, Viewing Distance and Pixel Pitch
Brightness and viewing distance are linked. A very bright screen can compensate for greater distances; a dimmer screen loses impact as viewers get farther away.
Pixel pitch (the spacing between pixels) also affects brightness perception. Finer pitch screens (3mm–5mm) show detail clearly but may appear less bright than larger pitch screens (10mm–16mm) displaying the same image, because the light is spread across more pixels.
For outdoor events, this means:
A 10mm pixel pitch screen with 8,000 nits will look brighter than a 5mm pitch screen at 8,000 nits, even though both specifications are identical.
If you're buying a fine-pitch outdoor screen for close viewing, you may need additional brightness to compensate.
For large crowds far from the screen, larger pixel pitch and higher brightness work together effectively.
There's no one-size-fits-all rule. The combination of brightness, pixel pitch, viewing distance and ambient light all determine whether your screen is readable.
Practical Brightness Guidelines for Outdoor Events
Rule of thumb: Outdoor full-sun events need at least 10,000 nits. Partial shade or evening events can work with 5,000–8,000 nits. If you're unsure, brief your AV partner on the actual sunlight conditions, not assumptions.
When planning your event, be specific about the environment:
Time of day: Morning, midday and evening sun angles are very different. A noon event in summer needs more brightness than a 6 p.m. event.
Season: Winter sun is lower and less intense than summer sun. Outdoor screens that work in December might not be bright enough in July.
Shade structures: A marquee, scaffold structure or canopy reduces ambient light significantly. You can use a lower-brightness screen under cover.
Surface reflectivity: Light-coloured ground surfaces (white marquee flooring, light tarmac) reflect light upward and make the screen harder to see. Dark surfaces absorb light and improve contrast.
Crowd positioning: If your audience is directly between the sun and the screen, they're seeing the screen against a bright sky. If they're positioned with the sun behind them, the screen appears brighter and clearer.
These details matter more than the nit specification alone.
The Cost and Performance Trade-Off
Higher brightness screens cost more. A 10,000-nit outdoor screen is significantly more expensive than a 5,000-nit one—both to buy and to hire.
But running an event with a screen that can't be seen is far more costly in terms of impact, audience experience and your reputation. If you're hiring a screen for a sports event or brand activation, the screen's job is to be visible. Cutting corners on brightness to save money on hire is a false economy.
The right approach is to match brightness to actual conditions:
Request a site survey or detailed brief from your AV partner on sunlight, crowd position and background environment.
Use that information to spec the right brightness level, not the cheapest option.
Factor brightness into your content design—high-contrast, dark-background graphics work better in bright conditions than light, pastel designs.
Weather and Brightness in Real Conditions
Brightness performance changes with weather. A cloudy day reduces ambient light, so your screen looks brighter relative to its surroundings. Rain or heavy cloud cover makes a 5,000-nit screen perfectly visible, whereas the same screen would struggle in the same location on a sunny day.
This is why event organisers who've done outdoor screens before ask about weather forecasts, not just equipment specs. A reliable AV partner will adjust their plans if weather conditions change—moving the screen position, adjusting content brightness, or recommending temporary shading if the forecast is sunny.
Conclusion: Brightness Is Part of the Plan
Outdoor LED screen brightness matters because it determines whether your content is seen or invisible. It's not a number to optimise for its own sake; it's a practical requirement set by your environment, audience position, time of day and ambient light.
When you're planning an outdoor event or installation, treat brightness as part of the site planning conversation, not an afterthought. Discuss the actual conditions with your AV partner—sunlight angle, ground surface, crowd sightlines, time of day and weather forecast. Use that information to choose a screen with the right brightness specification for those real conditions.
