Then the sun comes out in full force, and your carefully planned visuals become a dim, washed-out ghost on the screen. This is the reality of underestimating outdoor LED screen brightness.
Brightness—measured in nits (or candelas per square metre)—is not a nice-to-have for outdoor displays. It's a hard requirement. An indoor screen running at 1,000 nits might look brilliant in a conference hall. That same screen outdoors in daylight becomes nearly invisible. Understanding why brightness matters, and how to spec it correctly, is the difference between an event that lands and one that falls flat.
How Sunlight Defeats Dim Screens
The human eye adapts to ambient light. In a dark room, you'll see detail on a screen running at just a few hundred nits. Outdoors on a sunny day, the sun itself floods the environment with around 100,000 lux of illumination. Your screen has to compete with that.
When sunlight hits an LED screen directly—or reflects off surrounding surfaces—the screen's light output must overcome the ambient brightness to remain visible. A screen rated at 3,000 nits might seem bright indoors. Outdoors in direct sun, it struggles to deliver contrast and colour clarity. But nits alone don't account for contrast ratio, colour accuracy, or pixel pitch. A screen with high nits but poor contrast can still look washed out. Conversely, a lower-nit screen with excellent colour performance and anti-glare treatment might outperform a brighter but dimmer-looking display in certain conditions.
Rule of thumb: For outdoor daytime events in the UK, specify a minimum of 5,000 nits. For full-sun environments or critical visibility (fan zones, safety information, brand moments), aim for 7,000+ nits.
Environmental Factors That Affect Perceived Brightness
Raw nit output is only one part of the picture. Real-world performance depends on several other factors:
Viewing angle and direction. If the audience is looking directly into bright sun reflected off the screen, even a 10,000-nit display can feel dim. Position matters. Overhead sun is harder to fight than lower-angle sun. A screen facing north in the Northern Hemisphere catches less direct sun than one facing south.
Ambient surroundings. A screen positioned against a white wall or light-coloured building absorbs less reflected light and appears brighter than one surrounded by dark surfaces. The colour of the ground, walls, and nearby structures all affect how bright your screen needs to be.
Weather and cloud cover. A partly cloudy day reduces ambient brightness significantly, allowing a lower-nit screen to perform well. A completely clear, high-altitude day (e.g., in mountain venues or coastal areas) demands higher brightness. UK weather is notoriously variable—plan for worst-case conditions if visibility is critical.
Time of day. Midday sun is relentless. Early morning and late afternoon events face lower ambient brightness but can suffer from low-angle glare. Evening events require less screen brightness but demand strong contrast to stand out against the darkening sky.

A bright screen showing pale, washed-out colours is worse than a moderately bright screen showing rich, accurate colour. High brightness can sometimes compress colour range if the display isn't properly tuned. This is where pixel pitch comes into play too. What time of day is the event? Daylight intensity varies dramatically across a 24-hour period.
Will the sun be directly on the screen, or shaded? Direct sun requires significantly higher brightness than shaded or sheltered setups.
What's the weather forecast, and what's the worst-case scenario? If you need visibility on a bright day, design for that. If it's an evening-only event, you can lower specs.
How far away is the audience? Viewing distance affects how bright a screen needs to feel. A screen viewed from 50 metres requires higher brightness than one 10 metres away.
What's the content? Fast-moving graphics and high-contrast visuals feel brighter than slow content or monochrome displays. Sports footage, for example, tends to look sharper and more impactful on a bright screen.
Is the screen a secondary element, or is it the focal point? If the audience is gathered specifically to watch the screen (like a fan zone), brightness is non-negotiable. If it's ambient or contextual, you might have more flexibility.
Brightness and Total Cost of Ownership
Higher brightness screens typically cost more to buy and hire. They consume more power and may require more robust structures to support them safely. However, the cost of underspecifying brightness—a dim, hard-to-see event that damages your brand or fails to engage the audience—is often higher than the cost of hiring the right screen upfront.
